Question Having problems with FPS in games

Hey guys, I am having some issues with framerate in games, like fallout new vegas.
I think my system shouldn't have much of an issue with this game so I'm not sure where the issue lies.

Hardware
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H Mobo
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Processor, 2812MHz (Not OCed(for the moment ;) ))
g.Skill F3-10667CL7 8 gigs 7-7-7-21
BFG GTX 285 OCFU
Dual monitor setup
windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

Situation
So I am playing new vegas and it recommended Medium settings for graphics. so I tweaked with them a bit to get a bit more out of it. Tried playing the game and frame rate was not that great at all dropped under 20 a lot just from walking around. Switched it to straight medium, slightly better still has issues. (Also playing at 1920x1080 during all this on second monitor which happens to be my TV). Then I lowered resolution to 720p essentially, things got mostly better but has issues still. dropped settings to Low and things are pretty good except certain scenes can still kill the frame rate. Dunno if you are familiar with New Vegas, but say you are in Primm in the Casino and there is the car in the middle of the room with the lights on it, if you walk up to it the frame rate can sometimes hit 8.. :( .

I know my computer isn't like Top of the line with GTX 5-- awesomeness in it. But I figured I would be able to get more out of New Vegas than that with it, I expected Medium-High with no issues. Even Fallout 3 had issues with AA on this computer.

So I'm not sure where the issue lies, CPU? GPU? Some sort of hardware incompatibility? Bad software? Energy saving software/hardware?

I do have energy saving things on, but I am under the impression that they shouldn't hurt games that badly, at least any sustained pain, because as the processor gets under load they just juice 'er back up to full.

Any help would be appreciated,
Kyle

I'm currently running a GTX 295 @ stock on a 3ghz quad core @ 2560x1600 and New Vegas is pretty smooth with everything maxed & no AA. Are you using latest drivers? What about other games any issue with your performance?

Have you tried 1920x1080 with some AA like 4? While your playing what is your GPU load? you may be dumping all your work to your CPU because of your Vid settings being too low for your Card.

Alright, I have done some more benchmarking and things...

oppo4sale, I don't play too many PC games right now, mostly xbox. But I do have Hot pursuit and Two worlds 2 on here which both run perfect 50+ fps with everything on (except AA in Two worlds). My drivers are 266.58 the latest.

Addictedtokaos, I cranked everything up to max even AA to 8, and a lot of the time the game runs smooth, but I'm still having those same times where it just drops. It is really annoying, and the stats are kinda weird too, so when the game is running fine at 60 fps my gpu usage is anywhere from 25-40 give or take. When the game drops to less than 20 fps my gpu usage also drops with it, down to less than 25%. Very strange, it's like it gives up on certain things. The cpu usage for Fallout varies between 20-35%.

Well, I figured out that it seems to be a multi display issue. If change my settings to display on only one of my two displays then it seems to fix the problem in the little scenario i was running in the game. Though, I do still think the numbers are pretty weird with the GPU usage dropping like that. As the game does more shouldn't the GPU as well? Hmm..

The only thing I can suggest is update your drivers?

sometimes SLI/Xfire just doesn't work out properly. Could be your drivers crashing too, but you didn't make any indication of your screen blanking.

Are you running your E6600 at stock settings? Your CPU could be choking your GPU. You might want to OC your Processor to 3.4+ if possible.

Thank you LarkStarr. I am indeed running a 1055T, my system thing is out of date but I did post details of my system in the first post, which you obviously read. But.. If you read that then where did SLI/xfire come from? I only have one GPU.
