ok, disconnect both the power and the data cable from it, then proceed to get a
live cd iso and put it on a cd (on another pc), you can try ubuntu,linux mint etc.
boot with that, if all good, then put the hdd back and try to install to it.
btw, you can check for memory errors with the live cd as well.

If you think its the hard drive test it using appropriate software (I recommend Ultimate Boot CD or Hiren's Boot CD, it has the software for all the most popular HDD brand + Memtest86+ to check your ram)
