@ 3.0Charlie and KaptCrunch: What if I told you your hunches might be correct? I've removed the SATA and power cables to both the optical drive and the hard drive, and read below...

@ SharpieTM: So, Prime95 is running right now in Ubuntu. How many passes/how long should I let it run for? Unlike last night, I started testing at 6:31pm and it didn't tank in 10 seconds. This time, it's gone through Test 1, 2, 3 and is now on Test 4 at 6:38pm.

This said, I'm not sure if it's the DVD or the HDD or the RAM.

***STOP THE PRESSES... AGAIN***

At 6:42, on Test 5, FATAL ERROR: Resulting sum was... "X" expected "Y"...
At 6:45, on Test 7, FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
At 6:46, on Test 7, FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.4999..., expected less than 0.5
At 6:46, EXECUTION HALTED.

So... now to remove a stick of memory and try again.

Trying with one stick only, in slot 0 (4096 - 130 reported on boot up).

And we have a loser. Torture test over before it began: FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4.

Now trying the other stick, just in case. TEST 1, 640K PASSED with one stick. I couldn't even get that far before. Now, I'm gonna try putting the other stick back in and re-run.

***BUZZER SOUNDS***

Test over before it began with two sticks. FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4. AGAIN.

That said, despite my memory passing MemTest86+, am I safe to say that the one stick is a dud as it has failed in BOTH slots as the secondary one?

Please advise.

@_dangTX_: Looks like you're right on that one; unfortunately, this RAM was purchased because I'd bought other RAM that was "too tall" because of the Big Shuriken heatsink/fan combo. So, I've booted back into Win7 and am running the Long DST from SeaTools to see how long it takes for my cpu to crash (if at all).

Couple options.

Running Seatools in DOS will confirm the HDD health.
Run Prime under Linux 1 stick at a time, in both slots. This will confirm the ram and slots. If failure, manual voltage adjustments will be required, then retest using Prime.
If no failures, then the board has a hard time dealing with 2 sticks of 4Gb.

Running long DST in Windows (over 45 minutes now) with no reboot at all. I'm willing to bet that if I leave it run overnight, it'll still be where I left it.

I tried running both sticks in both slots and the one stick repeatedly failed. I know it's definitely the one stick that's behaving badly but I'm not sure if the board is 100% sound, either.

if taking out one stick fixes it, its either the stick or the slot.
try the 'good' stick in the 'one' slot and see again. if ok boards ok and rams crap.

some dude named martin always says to stay away from ocz lol

Then running the sound stick in both slots with Prime will confirm that ram stick.
Long DST may take upto 12 hours to complete.

ninja'ed by Dan And I concur the comment about the OCZ ram... Gskill, Mushkin, Corsair, Kingston.

With that stick out, DST in Windows works great. About 2/3 of the way. I'm gonna run Prime before I go to bed and leave it go overnight and see what happens. I think it's safe to say the problem's found out. How long will Prime take to complete the stress test?

Prime will run as long as you want. 12 hours is the norm to call a board as "stable".
