My System Specs

Default 100% Fan and no boot

Hello all,

I've recently switched from an old 4870 to a 5870 1GB HIS and I'm experiencing some weird boot problems. When I first turn on my computer, the fan cranks immediately to 100%, but the computer won't actually boot up. I have to press and hold the power button until the computer shuts down, wait a few seconds, then hit it again. It usually works the second time with a quick rev to 100%, then settles down. I have a PC Power and Cooling 750 W PS so that shouldn't be the problem.

The only other weird thing is that my PC won't sleep...instead it reboots and pops back up to the desktop. It was doing this before the new vid card.

Any ideas?

Stick your 4870 back in the PC and see how it work. Usually when this happen it's a bad mobo or card.

Can we have your complete system spec please?

I know my ATI cards spin to 100% at first but then they spin slow after everytime. Seems like your video card is probably ok, your motherboard might be going bad.

Maybe try installing the new card, pulling out the power cord and waiting for the motherboard LEDs to go out, removing the CMOS battery, clearing the CMOS with the jump or switch, then rebooting, going into the BIOS and reconfiguring everything that's needed for booting (e.g. ACHI if you installed your OS with AHCI enabled), paying attention to the graphics options, and be sure to select the correct initial device as the PCI-E.

proxy is right, your computer might have just hate the card swap. A clear cmos could resolve it.

try another slot. also the difference in power consumption is not stellar, so that could be ruled out.
maybe the older mobo doesnt like the newer card? some dude brought me a pc the other day, no boot.
what he did he added a dvd writer lol,. took it out booted fine, put in my pc and it was ok, only in his pc it resulted in no boot.
go figure.

It almost seems like the computer needs that initial boot attempt as a "warm up", after which it works fine. This only happens when the computer has been shut down overnight. My MB is over 3 years old now and I've been running an OC'd Xeon 3100 for ages...maybe it's just past it's prime?
