My System Specs

Default 20 FPS GTX470 SLI

Hey all, hows everyone doing?

Heres my dilemma - Recently installed my 2nd GTX 470 and SLI'd it up, but its straight up awful the lag i get, its like a 20 FPS cap. With 1 card all games run DRASTICALLY improved, ie: bfBC2- 70fps, lotro-80fps etc..

IMPORTANT NOTES:

-- i dont believe CPU bottlenecking to be the culprit- Tried both Quad and Dual Core CPU'S and the frames stay EXACTLY the same.

-- PSU is 900W rated continuous, 1000W max load

SYSTEM SPECS:

win 7 x64
EVGA 750 I SLI
4GB RAM
2x GTX 470's
e7400@3.7ghz
900W PSU

FPS with SLI enabled : 20

Setup # 2

win 7 x64
Asus PQ5 PRO -Intel Hacked Nvidia drivers enabled-257.15 and 258.96 tested
4GB Ram
2x GTX 470's
Q8300@3.5ghz
900W PSU

FPS with SLI enabled : 20

Originally i thought hacked drivers on the PQ5 PRO were the problem, so i scrapped the "FAKE" SLI and ran with my old 750I, now im running nvidia drivers 260.99 and FPS results are the same entirely.

Games/benchmarking - both systems are resulting in essentially the same performance so assume benches the same:

Lord of the rings online

1 card- 80 fps (ultra high, dx11, 1920x1200)
2 cards- 20 fps (same settings, dx10-60fps)

BFBC2

1 card- 45-75 FPS (all settings maxed, 4xAA)
2 cards 35-45 FPS (same settings)

GTA4

(dies on duel core)
quad- 1 card-35-40 fps
Quad core-2 cards - 20 fps wont budge higher, just like lotro

Ive installed/reinstalled/driver sweeped lots of times, so im really not sure where to go from here.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried it using each card separately in both PCI-e slots (one at a time, top and bottom)to determine if it is one of the cards or one of the PCI-e slots that is causing a problem? Also, just a shot, but when in SLI mode have you checked to make sure the 3D is disabled in the nVidia control panel?

i havnt tested the PCI E slots seperatley, didnt think it was necesarry being as i doubt both MOBO's have a faulty PCIe Slot. As for the NVCP 3D setting, it says SLI is enabled in the panel, even after "disabling" sli and expecting the system to have no choice but to run off 1 card, i ran lotro at around 35 fps, normally 80fps on 1 card, i just pulled the 2nd 470 from my system and am going to try it with just 1 card installed, will post back in a few moments.

while you have tried it on two older mobos, the limitations from the hardware should have not had such an impact. thus im thinking its probably driver/software related.

had this happen many times in crossfire and it turned out to be drivers try running a different set. but i would listen to kruzin and test both cards first to make sure you have no hardware problems good luck

Tested both PCIe slots (while using the PQ5 PRO board) and to no avail, also uninstalled SLIpatch (for running sli on intel boards) entirely and have tried drivers-257.15, 258.96 and currently using 260.99. All resulting in around the same performance, 260.99 producing the best FPS (only a 3-5 fps gain on average).

most of my testing is done on lotro, as thats what i really love playing

After doing all of this, i figured okay, maybe it is one of the GTX 470's being a piece of poop and ive ordered a lemon. SO i pulled out the PALIT 470, and put in my PNY 470, FPS are perhaps slighltly higher? but based on performance being so similar i think it could just be server load etc.. causing any FPS change from one card to the other. SO essentially each card appears to be fine as well.

Im really starting to think your right and its drivers, why the hell have i gone from 50-80+FPS on one card, installed SLI (got the crapper frames), reverted, and am now getting 45-60 FPS at most, not making a whole lot of sense, thinking of just doing a fresh install of windows 7.

before i do anything drastic, do you guys think it would be worth trying an OS reinstall? ive swapped drivers multiple times and cleaned with driver sweep, restarted after each uninstall, install, reinstall correctly etc..
