My System Specs

Default nVidia GPU Fan locked at 100%

Synopsis: eVGA GTS 250 video card got pulled from one of my Windows XP folding rigs. While folding, had eVGA Precision programmed to lock the card at 100% fan speed. The vid card now resides in a Win 7 x64 rig, and has defaulted to the 100% fan speed. Loading Precision and trying to turn the fan speed back to auto doesn't work, also tried Riva Tuner with the same effect.

Help: There are a few variables here, I guess for starters is there anything special I need to do in Win7/64 to get these fan tools to work? Or because I didn't place the vid card back into Auto Fan mode on it's native Windows XP machine; am i hooped? This is a strange problem

thanks in advance.

[edit]
using nVidia Display Driver 258.96

Yes this is odd alright....So when you installed the GPU into the W7 Rig it defaulted to 100% Fan speed? So, you installed precision and it still won't allow you to set the Fan speed lower? huh....really, if you close Precision and do a Cold Boot the GPU should start up in its default state....

this will sound kinda nuts,,,,but can you try installing the Card in your XP Rig and get the fan at default "Auto" on thier...then put it back into your W7 Rig?

something is pushing the fan on 100 on the new rig. and its software, i believe. the chance that it gets hard locked on 100% speed profile would be quite hard. next step(after dealing with soft and following rj's advice)

would be to get yourself the bios and mod it. i know i had to do it on a few cards that would ramp up more than i would like.

you can find nbitor here : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 470 465 460 ATI Radeon HD 5970 5870 5850 5830 :: MVKTech :: On the Edge of Technology

and nvflash here : techPowerUp! :: Downloads

i suggest you do it in dos mode, and learn how to blindly in case you screw something up. when editing the bios, look for the gren button. anything but green and its messed up. do not,for the love of god, touch memory timings and the like.

if you wish you could edit the stock voltage if the msi tool doesn't allow you to do it in windows.

the fan spins at 100% during post. I really don't feel like pissing around with the vid card's bios.

When i use eVGA Precision i have the option of auto or manual. Auto locks at 100, manual gives me the option of 100 or 100.. haha. Anything less than 100 under manual fan assignment comes up as "invalid".

bios tweaking is your answer. if you do not touch memory timings and the such you dont have to worry. as long as you dont lose power during flashing or something stupid like that. good luck :)

edit : if you want, i can look at your bios myself. save it with nbitor and send it to me or better upload it and ill dl from there.
