Default crossfire dilemma

Ok not sure if this is in the right place or not. But ive had an i7 860 ever since they were released and have been enjoying it with my 5870. But about a month ago i decided i was gonna try going crossfire 2 5870s so i picked up a second one. i am wondering since i went with an 1156 chip if i am really shooting myself in the foot now having a crossifre setup and if it would be worthwhile to upgrade to a i7 920 or would there be not much of a performance difference??

I have oced the chip the to 3.8 im not sure if it is enough for two cards or if i should be aiming for 4. Also I am having a heck of a time with crossfire drivers crashing games like mafia 2 and starcaft 2 and tf2. Those games work fine under a one card solution but i find if i ahve both cards in but turn of crossifre i get worse performance then i would with just one card in. is that a driver issue or am i really being able to see the difference between one card at 16x and one at 8x?

well, you game at..1920x1080/1200? more? set the chip at default, put fraps on and have it record. then pop it at 3.8 and see.
