possibly yes. but even then 1/10000 or such will mess up.

if you take out all drives, what happens?

i keep an old unit from ages past around, but usually use the usb one.

Follow this guide to create a bootable USB drive (written by our very own 3oh6). BIOS Flashing Guide :: USB Stick BIOS Flash for X58 SLI...
Then put your BIOS and flash program on it per DFI's instructions.

Or you could support HWC and use HOW TO: Making a USB Thumbdrive Bootable

you can use diskpart too How To make Bootable USB
the hp method is one of the easier way to make bootable for end user's. i personal like using diskpart keeps cmd fresh in the head
edit but buying a floppy is pointless because almost any method you use to make bootable will be seen in the bios as a floppy/usb so don't waste money

There that thread is! I did a search for it last night, but it's on page 3 of my search results I see now. Yes, Supergrover's guide works well, I've used it before.

tried an IDE drive, same thing happened.

Currently in the process of creating a bootable usb to flash the bios. Will report back after flashing.

update:
flashed the bios to most recent version (although I cannot verify the bios version anywhere...), installing windows 7 now.

update2:
all systems go!

thanks for the help guys
