Default Not a problem, but not sure where to post this

-not sure where to put this, you can move it-
Hello everyone, I am anant. I am buying a computer (hopefully will get it in under a week) and I have a few questions.

OS=Windows 7
  • What anti-virus and or anti-spywear program should I use for my new rig?
  • What programs do you recommend to keep my computer running at full potential? eg, ccleaner.
  • Are there any certain programs I should download/buy that will help my computer?
  • What program (xp needed one, not sure about win 7) should i use to check for out-dated drivers.
Should i leave my computer on for the first time i start it up to get it like broken in or something?
Also, I always turn my current xp computer off when i go to bed or when im going out for a few hours. Should I still do this with my new rig? Or do you advise using the sleep feature?

Thanks,

-Anant

for virus protection i use avg free but their are many others that are better im just careful with what i download , i torrent and have had my fair share of threats it finds them every time b4 anything happens. I scan once a week. For drivers i just always periodically check the manufactures site, for updates. Im really only using my Win7 partition for blu-rays and games ATM, im mainly on a Ubuntu partition. EDIT : and welcome to the forum, saw your other thread about your build.

MS has a free AV and spyware program.

Not in my opinion, keep it lean and clean.

Windows update does a pretty good job.

-AVG or Avast (free AV) or the M$ one
-ccleaner and MalwareBytes for junk (catches most stuff)
-I leave new builds powered on at least 48 hours. Helps settle any thermal issues, you can run updates all the while, and Win7 indexes everything by default and it takes a long time with multiple large drives.
-what you need depends on your use. If you are unsure, ask here. For almost everything you'll need there is open source or freeware. List your specs, your needs, and be specific.

Welcome aboard.
