Default Thermal Pad vs. Thermal paste?

Maybe this is the wrong forum, but I am looking for help trying to decide what to do. I've had to replace the CPU fan on my in-laws machine and when removing it noticed the heatsink was VERY loose and sloppy so I took it off too and figured I'd just put it back on with some new thermal paste. However, when reading the instructions I notice AMD recommends that a thermal pad be used in the Duron ships. Has anybody any experience with this? Can I just proceed with the paste? And if so, any tips on evenly spreading it on the chip?

Thanks in advance!

Thermal paste is fine... I only use the pad on new heatsinks when I'm not going to O.C. the chip... Just spread a thin even layer on the die and heatsink with your finger. Cover your finger with Saran Wrap first though so the oil from your finger doesn't contaminate the paste...

edit: I've done dozens of Durons with the paste this way... Just don't put too much paste.
