You just need to do an install repair with the windows disc and it should fix everything. It essentially just does a reinstall of windows without touching anything else.

Alright ill give that a go now, if i can find my Windows xp pro cd :S , its not loading the xp cd.. i have the right boot squence because it read the bootable disk..

usually if you tap f8 on a desktop computer it'll give you a boot menu to select which device to boot from.

Also, you'll need to touch a key with the Windows XP cd in order to make it boot up off the disc. By default the cd will say something like "touch any key to boot from cd" if you are booting up from a HD that already has a windows install on it.

The A43 File Management Utility included with UBCD4 will allow you to copy files to a USB flash drive - have the drive inserted when you boot so it is available. I use this method so as to immediately save valued files before continuing with troubleshooting/repair attempts. Using the Diagnostic Disc Tools to check the integrity of the HDD. I would do this with the HDD in the laptop.
