CPU i7 920 - Overheating!! ?
 

My i7 920 idles at around 41 Degrees C no over clock just @ 2.67ghz,

It seems fine until you do a stress test. I used Prime95's sensor test and temperatures rise over 80 degrees. When it hits 90 I shut off the test because I feel its dangerous.

I'm using default fan from Intel and I used default thermal paste that was already on. When I push the fan with my hand gently towards to cpu, no difference in temperature so I am not sure but it doesnt seem like re-seating is the problem. I think the problem lies in the Bios because when i went to it , fan control was on manual and i switched to thermal but not much difference...I think I need to setup the bios properly but this was my first build and i do not know how to setup the bios. I have the x58 motherboard from xfx.

Edit: These temps are with Speed step, turbo mode, and C-state tech enabled. I do not even know what they are but I enabled them ( they were disabled by default) When I enabled I noticed lower idle temp but also higher load temp.

With it off I get idle 45 Degrees C and Load around 85 Degrees C

Thats pretty much a stock cooler with crappy thermal paste for you mate.
They aren't built to deal with these CPU's properly and to boot have that damn push - pin mounting system.

Nothing in your BIOS is going to change that whatsoever.

What you need to do is get yourself a decent Aftermarket cooling solution (Zerotherm Nirvana, CM H520 etc etc) and some good thermal paste to help your cooling issues. Better fans than stock on your V9 case there will help as well, you need to supply adequate airflow to help feed the heatsink the fresh air it needs.

also, speedstep will help temp at lower load (idle etc...) since it is making you cpu ''underclock'' when not in use, thus generating less heat.

Intel also designed their cpu, so that if they become to hot, they will shut down. I would not mind much, unless you want to fold or run any application that will charge your cpu at 100 % 24/7.

If you do want to overclock, you need an aftermarket cooling solution for sure.

I c, so this is normal? This doesn seem normal even for stock cooler.

I have reseated the stock Cpu heatsink, cleaned off the old thermal paste with a dry cloth..
put on some of my new paste... and now I am seeing better temps.

More stable temps too, with Speed step, turbo mode, and C-state tech off, I am getter temps from min 38 degrees
to max 67 degrees which i see is much better.

Spend $25 and get a Hyper 212 +. Will be the best $25 bucks you ever spent. Oh yeah, get some good paste too. These two things will lower your temps.

The CM Hyper 212+ is a great heat sink for stock or overclocking as well. It wont handle extreme overclocks but it handles up until that point quite well.

My i7 920 reached 70c max running 100% for hours, with two video cards 100% too, in a poorly ventilated area at 3.4GHZ OC on the Hyper 212+

but dam i have like no money right now.. wasted it on this build lol.
When I play games and all my max temp iv seen is 58 for the cpu
so is it really that bad? when will i use my cpu at 100%
