Yeah it would be nice to have some ram and even another video card to swap (even if it was an old PCI one)

Got it all reassembled:

One big problem though:
I turned it on to see if by some chance it'd work, and there was a flash & a pop & then a burning smell.
Didn't see where it was exactly.

first off tell us what version of MB you have...may have to look on MB then get correct manaul

0-o too late you fixed the problem.....new MB

still i see not correct MB model on Gb site this must be a oem MB

Did you find out where the flash and pop came from? That component is toast most likely so you need to start there.

Nope, I was busy looking at the monitor to see if any display showed up.
Smell seemed strongest around the cpu area, but I didn't take the cpu/heatsink off when I tried POSTing outside the case

Probably coming from the VRM on the board. I found the 770 and 780 boards were really bad for this as they rarely cooled the mosfets which like to blow periodicly.Went through 3 AM2 boards with my phenom 9950 before I figured it out that the VRMs were problematic when not cooled.
