Default Finding a laptop for school

Hi guys,

I've been having trouble looking for a laptop that suits my needs. This is the first time I'm shopping for a laptop (for school), so I'm sparse on leads as to where to find a laptop that suits me. I was close to shopping from Dell, however, they are supremely overcharging me for things I clearly don't need (such as webcam, Vista, software, etc).
Here are my criteria:
  • Preferably an AMD Turion 1.8GHz or higher with 1MB L2
  • Must have 2GB of system memory
  • Lowest/cheapest possible hard disk drive space
  • 14-inch screen is perfectly fine; smaller would be cheaper
  • Some basic form of dedicated graphics controller (like the Radeon Xpress); nothing fantastic, of course
  • Whatever the operating system is, I'll just bin it for WinXP x64 like my desktop
  • Screen real-estate is quite important, so something like WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
  • everything else can pretty much be trash-worthy
To recap, I need processing power and productivity on the go (CPU, memory), but without all of the senseless sh*t most outfitters seem to insist on hooking onto my wallet (webcam, fingerprint readers, Lightscribe, Vista, and so on). I'm in a bit of a pinch now, mates, so all input is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

P.S.: Perhaps there should be a mobile computing section for the community?

Dell Inspiron 1501 w/ TL-56, 15.4" screen, 80gb, 2Gb ram comes to 689$. Not bad.

Inspiron 1501

Start with the model at 499$, then customize. I don't know about the screen resolution-wise, though.

I had my little sis' buy this very same laptop, and I'm typing this reply on an Inspiron 6400. Nothing wrong with it.

i dont' think you can get anything new without vista nowadays. The thing with Vista and OEM's is, they try to sel ya a version you don't need. Why a $500 desktop needs Vista Premium is beyond me. It don't have the vidoe power to run the one main feature of Premium...3DFlip.

Good find, Charlie. Although the laptop is a bit skimpy on screen size.

Personally the Mac Book is one of the best for school. And you can get one for a $1000 new also you can sell the free iPod or keep it. Plus you get student discounts. Also run Mac, Vista, and Xp if you want. Oh wait never mind. To get the screen resolution you want you need the hughest end macbook pro. That is $3000+.

Just one story. My brothers college got a nasty virus and since all the computers were connected through a network including the teachers and students computers were all infected but the mac ones. Almost everyone had to wipe their hard drives even though they had anti-virus software like norton, avg, etc. All the macs were fine. I will be getting a mac book for school in a year.

How about the Dell Insipron 1520. 15.4" screen with 1680x1050 resolution (assuming you pick it). However it's a Core 2 Duo with 8400GS or 8600GT graphics. I don't see whats wrong with that though.

The 1521 is AMD though, but no dedicated graphics choice. Only integrated Xpress1270.

I don't think a 14" LCD with 1680x1050 res even exists.

Ya $900 for the 8400 version. if I remember right the mobile 8600's have their own RAM, they don't use system ram like older laptops. The 8400 I have no idea.

I believe the 8600 has 256MB and the 8400 has 128MB. Both dedicated.

That notebook was my original intention. However, Dell seems quite persistent in pushing me a large hard disk drive, dual-layer DVD re-writer, and other software bundles. In any case, if other outfitters like Toshiba and HP are a no-go, then I'll just snatch up a 15-incher or Charlie's 14-inch.

Are there any other makes that anyone else recommends?

BTW, I'm taking a look at Dell's workstation laptops now. They seem to fit the bill quite nicely, most of them coming with XP and few (if any) bullsh**. However, they seem to charge more on a per-component basis than an Inspiron. What the hell... Okay, I'll just look at their 'Small business' models, then.

**edit: That's it. I'll just get a Dell with a TL-64 or whatever; then shred it open, and slam in 4GB of memory. Pretty pissed at all notebook outfitters right now

Yeah I would definately recomend the 1520s. I know its Intel (and I don't like intel :) ) But its a great package, it games well, and I trust Dell since I worked there for a brief stint. And, you can get it for under a grand before taxes.
