It starts running, then it says theres an error and it crashes. I googled the error message and found that lots of people had the same problem, and they were all using 64-bit Vista. i know the program should run in Vista, but i cant get it to work.

Nope, should work flawlessly, I run many virtual labs in VirtualBox and VMWare Workstation, in both 32bit and 64bit environments. VirtualBox is a great little program and best of all, its free!

Well, I successfully installed VirtualBox, and am running XP right now. Thanks for the help, however, as always comes when I install an OS, I have a whole new set of problems. First off, do I need to instal a new set of drivers for XP? If I do, it cant tell what my graphics card is. I downloaded GPU-Z and it says unknown, and when I install the nVidia driver, it says the driver doesn't work with my graphics card, and it closes. Is this a normal problem? Is there a way to fix it, or is it just a limitation of running Xp in VirualBox?

And, can I make USB sticks work in VirtualBox? Even better, can I make it so XP and Vista can share files? Do I have to connect them to a workgroup? Can XP and Vista even network with eachother?

What are your plans for the virtual pc? VirtualBox is not intended for gaming and mostly meant for other things like folding or office type work. So really drivers don't matter if you read the instructions you'll see how to install the "VirtualBoxAddons" which should install the drivers for you.

Yes you can make USB sticks work but you need to enable usb sharing within virtualbox.

Yes you can share files.

Again this is all in the documentation.

As long as you install the VirtualBoxAddin drivers and files just fine, you should have copy paste support across the host and guest, meaning you can just drag files in and out seamlessly.

I just want XP to sit there running an OpenSim server so that I can connect to it with secondlife on vista. It's not world class 3d editing software, but it's free. If you don't know, OpenSim is an open source version of second life. I can run my my own server with OpenSim, and connect to it on any computer by just changing the shortcut target. Does this sound possible using VirtualBox?

That should work just fine, as long as your not doing or need to do any GPU rendering inside the virtual machine(which running a server, gaming or otherwise, does not).

Should work well.
