Default New half-finished build fails to boot.

So as you may know I'm building this machine. So far I have my Q6600 and 4GB Mushkin Ascent DDR2-800 from my old system (which worked) and a Maximus II Formula I bought off sinticfury (tyvm!).

Before going any further with this I decided to test it out. I bent a pin on the mobo during the long transport home, so I bent it back using a magnifying glass and a sewing needle. Cleaned off the Q6600, it seated no problem. Seated the RAM. Cleaned off some UV paint left on the both the NB heatsink and the MOSFET heatsink as well as the back of the sound card with some 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

I tried at first with the mobo on top of a cardboard box with only my 4850 as an extra peripheral. Note that I didn't have the CPU heatsink at the time cos I couldn't find it. I thought that if I only leave it on for 20 or 30 seconds before powering it down then it should be enough to let the machine boot without overheating.

So I pushed the big red "start" button at the bottom of the board and it starts up, lights on, fans spin, etc. Goes on for about 5 seconds, then turns off. Immediately starts up again, goes for 5, maybe 6 seconds, then turns off. Finally, it turns back on again...and stays on...but no beep. I have a speaker plugged into the mobo as well that came with my Cosmos S. It's on, there's no beep codes, nothing showing up on the screen for the remaining 20 seconds it had. Turned it off immediately after.

Tried again with different RAM configuration, tried with 1 of 2 sticks in all four slots, tried 2 sticks in all sorts of different slots. No luck, does pretty much the same thing all the time. Am I looking at a dead CPU?

TL;DR - New CPU, new RAM, new mobo that doesn't boot. Tried with different RAM setups. Is CPU broken?

Push the BIOS chip in a bit with your finger and hold it in for like 20 seconds or 10. And then try. Almost the same thing happend to me except it would beep but screen wouldnt load and I did that and it worked.

Same thing happened to me, the heatsink wasn't mounted correctly and it overheated before it posted.

I don't have a heatsink mounted on it right now. Before when it did though I remember the CPU did overheat one time when I improperly re-seated the heatsink after I cleaned it out. The CPU shut down though, and it seemed to boot once after the incident before it was put in storage for a good 6-8 months...Is the CPU fried? I gotta get my buddy to test it I dont have any other 775 motherboards in the house.

sorry not good running without HS for any cpu, as you have learned the cpu is toasted for no post you described.

to confirm have your bud test cpu, if good then look @ bios chip loose or corrupted

I have heatsinks and all the stuff you'd need in order to test your motherboard, ram, and cpu. I'm located in Surrey if you need help.

I would never try to Boot up a Board without a CPU Heat Sink...even for a only a few minutes / sec.....??!!

Anyhow, don't you have to have a CPU Heat sink Fan oplugged into the CPU Fan Header on the Mobo to get a proper Boot sequence?
