I think the major problem is that the whole house has been sealed up tight pretty much with the air condition going and the humidity is high and I wouldn't be surprised if there is a lot of static in the air.

I would recommend then running/convincing your parents to get a dehumidifer for the house/basement since its a good way to reduce the static electricity in the house and also makes it easier to breath since well there is less water in the air

Ya I think I will but now that I think about it there might be one build into the air conditioning.
