Default Blue Screen and Reboot Loop - Please Help

I turned on my system this morning and the system post ok, starts with the Windows boot logo for a second , then goes to a blue screen for a split second and reboots. I am not sure what to check first. Please help.

I removed the memory modules and reinstalled only one 2G module - not dice! Tried booting in safe mode - same problem.

See my system setup profile below. Thanks.

First thing to do is use F8 to turn off automatic restarts on system failure

The BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) will have some information that may actually help you figure out the problem.

Debugging Tools and Symbols: Getting Started

This has a quick little guide for analyzing the memory dump file or memory mini-dump file for clues on what exactly caused the blue-screen, by using windows-debugging tools.

Here is the info on the Blue Screen:

Check for viruses, remove any new HD or controller
Check HD configuration and run chkdsk.

I have not installed anything new at all - will a windows repair work ?

Try resetting your BIOS first before you go any deeper.

I tried resetting the BIOS and even changed the battery. A few weeks I have been noticing that the time was off too. So new battery, BIOS reset, but still having the problem.

AN UPDATE:

I connected a spare Drive and tried to reinstall Vista. I got an error that "Windows could not determine if this computer contains a valid system volume". What does this mean? The installation was cancelled. What is going on ?

Default SATA Controller Problem ??

I finally got an old IDE Drive installed thru the IDE Controller and reinstalled Vista. Windows runs ok with this drive, but as soon as I reconnect any of my SATA drives, the old Blue Screen and Reboot loop starts again. How do I troubleshoot the SATA controller ?? Thanks.

Put the SATA drive you are having problems with into a different computer and run chkdsk on it.

Then put it back in the machine and try again.

Default Problem Solved !

I have always set the SATA Configuration in the Bios to use the SATA drives as Parallel ATA drives. Yesterday I thought I would try something different and set it to AHCI. I am not sure exactly what this does - but I thought "what the heck" and tried it. Well, I rebooted the system - no more blue screen. The system booted ok and its been running fine since. Could someone explain why the AHCI configuration solved the problem ? What exactly does this setting do ?

Thanks for your help guys.
