Talking Heres A Funny One

Saw a P5Q PRO today. So what you say yeah Me to but...

we look inside the case lo and behold the upper 12v eatx plug line still has the black close off plug in it on the left with a smaller eatx power plug in it on the right for its power!!!

I mention how the black close off plug should be removed with the proper eatx12v 8 pin line inserted

He says okay lets do that.

We shut it down, remove and stow the old line, remove the black cap, install the 8 pin 12v eatx line properly.

Boots up fine alls well.

Heres my question how did the thing run in the first place?

Guy says its been running like that for 2 and a half weeks that way.

He says hasn't had an issue!

Anybody seen that before

You can run with 4 pins of an 8 pin power plug, its just alot less stable power, you wont really see the difference untill you start overclocking a quad in there.

EDIT: Ive seen people run boards with 4 pin atx power using an 8 pin Eatx connector.... they just leave the other 4 hanging out the side. As far as I know the 8pin is just set up with dual 4 pin configuration for power, I may be wrong but thats just how it seems to work. thats still pretty funny considering he had room for the 8 pins

Hmmmm was it running a Dual Core when it had the 4pin Plug connected instead of the 8?
I think (not 100% on this) that you plug the 4pin in for The Core 2's and use the 8pin for the High End Quad/Extreme's.

Much like Boards have those 4pin Molex spots for when you are running X-fire/SLI setups.

MY thoughts at least anyways,

The reason the blocking plastic peice is in there is so that when you only have an ATX 4pin power connector you can use it and you will know what side of the EPS connector to put it in. If you have an 8 pin EPS power connect it is highly recommended to use ALL the pins weather its dual or quad, it just gives more even power and allows for more phases. Theres no ill effects of using it with a dual core and I dont think youll really see any benefits but like you said quads and extremes will need that power.

If you do any overclocking on any board use the 8 pin whether its a dual core or a quad. It provides more stable power to the board and will help.

Using the 4 pin is perfectly fine if you just use your machine and don't ask a lot from it.
