Default computer restarting in some games.

ok, so my computer has been acting weird last couple days, During some games it has been artifacting (told me right there it was a gfx issue), and then after a few seconds of artifacting it restarts.

Before it restarts, the screen goes greyish and lines flutter accros it from top to bottom.

this has happened three times in 2 days, twice during crysis and once during world at war.

thing is, when i went back into crysis, i had no crysis saves! no biggy, i beat the game once before anyways and was gonna restart it.

So i checked, and to my surprise, my top 4870 wasn't properly seated, we have been doing construction in the basement, where my room is and had to move my pc up to my bros room for the week. Figured the dvi cable was hit, causing it to unseat it self properly.

Put it back in place, but havent tried stressing it yet to see if that was it.

figured since it wasn't seated properly it was getting the proper amount of power or something, so the pc reset.

Anyone have any ideas of what it is in case i didn't fix it?

I was going to suggest that if it does it again then maybe suspect heat but I notice you have the HAF which should push a lot of air over your cards.

What about the card drivers? Have they been updated?

BTW how do you like the Samsung 2253BW? I just picked one up for a system. Great real estate on that screen. I haven't had a chance to test it out with any games but it looks like it will rock.

The fact that data is missing suggest to me that your overclock might not be as stable as you think, Crysis is excellent at routing out an unstable overclock. Try backing off your E8400 to 4.0GHz and underclock the videocard to stock levels and if you're currently running cat 9.1 try rolling back to 8.12.

After resetting the gfx cards i played warhead at full settings, 4xaa for two levels no prob, ill try cod:waw now as well.

@snafu the cards get up to a max of maybe 60 at load, around 40 at idle. CPU has never gone up above 45 in games (core temp has an app for the g15, so i know this).
also, the samsung is the best monitor i have ever owned, sweet spot for size to res imo. The colours are beautiful!

@Eagle Eye, i never though of that, i'll try lowering to speed to 4ghz if it happens again, not like im gonna lose much in terms of gameplay. Also, i am using 8.12, as 9.1 i didn't see any improvements, as a matter a fact, in crysis, i lost 5fps, and i lose 30 points (marginal i know) in 3dmark06. Maybe a bad driver reinstall? something else to try if it happens again.

I had the same issue with my E8400 4.0GHz was no problem 4.25GHz caused some headaches.

Make sure you use this utility after each driver uninstall, it helps minimize issues with new driver installations.

Procedure: Uninstall driver, reboot press F8 during boot, select just safe mode, run driver sweeper cleaning only ATI, reboot, install new drivers.

Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

200MHz is likely to make little difference, I found that 4.0GHz was a happy median with my E8400 no issues at all with any games or programs.
