I using Sennheiser PC 360 headphones with an Asus Xonar U3 sound card. I also have some HD 518 that I like the sound a bit more but they don't have a mic or volume control so I end up using the PC 360 most of the time. Where my PC is located it is in an open space and others in the house would be disturbed by speakers.

Agree with @LaughingCrow. Positioning and run them in with some challenging source material. They will loosen up...(or die in the process.). Edit: I should add that it can take many hours..and I will also add that you will notice when they open up. You may still not like the overall balance though.
