Just a suggestion, you might want to make the thanks anonymous (or will it make it useless?). Cause I started clicking the thanks button to almost everyone with my realization my name was appearing at the bottom.

If you REALLY want to thank someone, send them some points!

Sillyness. Cluttering up the threads with this stuff if you ask me. If anything, you should add "+1" and "-1" to each post. That was good useful comments will still get "thanked" properly, and useless spam can be pushed into the negatives (and who knows what then? some sites grey out posts with too low a score).

<Sarcasm>
"Hey everyone! If you "like" this post then say "thanks"!!!!111one1!!1!eleven!!

How about doing a POLL to see what people prefer:
1. Thanks button
2. Rating (+1/-1)
3. Point Exchange
4. Combination of the above
5. etc.

I am not finding myself upset with a thanks button, I am on another forum that does it but they keep the names small to avoid cluttering things up(until 30+ people click it :P )
But do not start censoring posts if you implement this up&down voting business.

I need to say that you should never add any requirement to use the thanks button. It should never ever unlock content or give any sort of special status, etc. This is not facebook.

We do already have a point exchange capability. It should be retained.

I think the thanks button is fine but as others have said you should get rid of the bar with the names of the people that have thanked that post. Really just useless clutter if you ask me. Also like MacJunky said this should never stop people from seeing any type of content.
