Not quite sure what sort of algorithm determines how often they show, but it seems a little random. Sometimes it's just every third or fourth post, other times, every single post has an ad. And on the whole, we're fairly good about signatures here, and we don't get a lot of the eyesores that plague other sites, but that makes the ads stand out that much more. While I realize this is technically a good thing from the advertisers' point of view, it does start to encroach into the "distracting" category.

It's also kind of funny sometimes to see different sites offering a deal on the exact same product.

Seems to be getting a bit grumpy in here. I don't think it really needs to get to that point.

Honestly, I don't see it as a big deal personally. Like a previous person posted, I don't even notice the sponsored deals anymore, I just glaze over them. But that could be an issue for the deals themselves. With people learning to just ignore them out of hand, they don't receive the attention they should, and people might miss a relly good deal because they've trained themselves to ignore it. I would simply find it more convenient to be able to find all the sponsored deals in one place. Besides, the chances of the exact item I may be looking for popping up at random in a thread I happen to be reading at that time is fairly slim.

But details of implementation aside; I don't have an issue with forums paying the bills via ads, banners, whatever. But everybody's entitled to their opinion either way.

When I first saw the sponsored deals, I assumed the person attached it to the sig.

Could the Sponsored Deal be placed in the header bar of the post and different items be placed throughout the thread?

If this revenue method bothers you, check out Kyle Bennett's viewpoints regarding adblockers used on HardOCP.com and posters complaining about ads.

Advertising is a necessary evil for us to enjoy this site.

How many of us give props to advertisers and other businesses in our posts?

I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this topic without the moderators or site owner shutting down the discussion.

Here is my issue.

I like to browse this site on my phone.

With the barrage of ads and these now it makes it almost unbearable.

I don't mind them, but you really need to implement a phone friendly site and fast.

It's not WHAT their doing(I fully support the "sponsored deals" and other advertising to keep this great site up), its HOW their doing it.

The idea is that some of these will eventually become "daily" deals and will rotate on a regular basis.
Also the public had free access to our "sponsored deals" you just had to visit the the thread for a link. This is supposed to be the same idea.

It is a part of the "TechWiki" deals feature: Hot Deals - TechWiki
So it is an in house thing rather than us selling out the website - We want to bring the hot deals to you guys so you are aware of them and we are trying to spur retailers in offering exclusive discounts.

It is a two way street - we want to be able to offer great deals on products from local retailers - and retailers want to get something for offering an exclusive deal.
Wow you guys are doing a lot for us, I personally do appreciate.. Though I do agree, the signature does look bulky, but I'll also say they do when you think they do, if you just go to a thread and read someone's post/thread, necessarily don't have to look at it everytime..

Though, I have to say, I didn't know HWC was getting back to sponsored deals, until I saw some signatures, I first kept ignoring them, when I looked at them, I found some very good deals...

Thanks for posting this thread OP, as I was thinking the same thing. They are really annoying, as they take over every third post (or whatever it is). I appreciate all the work and what not, but the old way of offering deals was much better. Or how about having them on the main page, or at the top/bottom of every page, rather than each individual post. OR!!!! an option to turn them off. That would be amazing, as it really ruins the whole feel of this place. It is starting to look and feel cheesy. I can't emphasize that last bit enough, it really ruins the feel of HWC as a forum.

Hopefully they guys running the place will take a look at the thread and see how to best do this. I mean, we want this site and forum running, we want reviews, we want contests, we want sponsored deals and lord help you if we need to look at some banners.

Again, I'm of two minds for this. Threads look busy, and I hate ads in general so I am trying to be fair. Maybe just fewer of them, or as it seemed last week, on the first post of each page?

The adult in me wants to complain about the ads; but the kid in me wants to have fun with them:
