Default Contests + more folding

As i saw somewhere today or yesterday that the great staff at hwc may be having more contests coming up, it got me thinking. Why don't we make some of them relating/requiring members that fold. Most if not all rigs can fold as long as they get setup for it. This way we could potentially grow our folding base with some of our members whom don't or haven't looked into it, help our numbers, help with the research with more folders all with a chance to win stuff. If it opened the door to people who folded for just a day or afternoon, could make a minimum pdd or overall contribution points as well. If this is a bad idea or i'm out of line lemme know

Heh... had to check your join date before responding.... ;)

You missed the last big contest by a couple of weeks....

HWC's Folding@Home Push for 100 Contest

I'm sure there'll be some kind of DC (distributed computing) contest in the future, but we wouldn't want all of our contests to exclude members who (for whatever reason) aren't folding for team Hardware Canucks.....

I do like the idea, it was good for the earlier contest we had as well. Possibly another option would be that the person had to be a member of HWC before the contest started. The new 1 posters flocking contests make me mad and sad.

Keep in mind that holding contests isn't a completely altruistic undertaking. We certainly do want to recognize our long-term members, but at the same time we also want to attract new members.

The last contest was a good chance for us to be able to incorporate a parallel contest which was only available to members while still offering something to encourage new membership. We'll always keep our eyes open for an opportunity to do that, but not all contests (like the current one) lend themselves to those kinds of special considerations.

Also keep in mind there is a very big difference between HWC Contest, and vendor/manufacturer sponsored contests - the later having a completely separate purpose than to just give people stuff

The last contest did a really good job of getting our team ppd up. We were ~250,000 ppd prior (maybe a little higher) and now are ~490,000 ppd.

I don't think newer contests will have as big an effect, but will certainly help keep the newer folders and get a few more.

In the meantime, this NCIX contest (non-folding) is one kick-ass contest that we all can look forward to.

I'm all for this, but sadly I don't fold for HWC. And as with every contest, people come and fold just so they can win the prizes. Once they win or the contest is over, many of the folders leave HWC.
