Heres another article for you guys to read, this one looks more realistic hence why I wonder if its a chipset issue.

So what seems to be the concensus with this model to dump it over the 500gb or is it just a firmware issue to avoid because itso nly sale for 74 bucks at ncix.

Looks like he had roughly the same results as me. But then with RAID, things improve greatly. You guys are definitely onto something about this drive and AHCI.

Both 640GB drives have been on sale for $73-74 at NCIX on a weekly basis. If you want to RAID them, the results seem to point in favor of the 7200.11. If in AHCI mode, the WD is the one to get for now. Gotta email Seagate and see what they have to say about this.

Yeah would love to hear from Seagate. I might even pick up couple 7200.11 640's for RAID. I'll buy from my local retailer, but wait, maybe ncix comes with a good sale price (I remember seeing those Seagates on sale for around $65-$70, somewhere in that range)..

Still no news from Seagate. Last message from them was
We have not seen any issues with running in AHCI mode. I will check into somemore and when I get an update I will let you know.

Best regards
...and that was a week ago (9/15). I'll give them another week before I follow up to see what they're up to, if anything.

Any updates from Seagate yet S_G. Its been about time they should have sent you info, it doesn't take a week for them to do extended tests on hard drives.

OT: I wish someone could compare the Seagate 640gb to the Samsung 640gb, just out of curiosity I would like to see the performance increase/decrease, is that samsung drive really worth it. Samsung's 1TB drive is probably one of the best out there right now, and lots of hype that the 640gb is based on the 1TB design, making it almost as fast.

With the amount of fluctuating results people are having with these 640gb drives, makes me wonder if I should just go for couple 500gb hard drive, they are constantly on sale for about $50, just under $60. Save $20+ plus, I can put that in something else or buy a 3rd 500 gb drive.

I am not too keen on getting a Samsung F1 drive. They are too prone to errors and failure, I just would not risk it no matter what the speed gain.

No word from Seagate, I'm emailing them again right now.

Gr8 thanks S_G.. So I guess this is how it is for 640gb usage right?

1 drive = WD
2 or more = Seagate

NCIX currently have them on sale till the 30th Sept for $72, and I calculated, with shipping included it costs about roughly $170.00 for 2 drives, its odd my local store sells WD @ $79.95 ea. with tax it ends up to be about $168. pretty close call. I'm trying to decide what route to go. Or 500 gbs.
