What are the benefits of doing firmware updates? Do they ever add support for new anti-piracy protections etc?

well, firmwares in my experience can help fix media incompatibilities or improve writes to certain media codes or add support for overburning, etc...

don't do it unless you want the additional features, just like a BIOS -- if it ain't broke (and you don't need the extra functionality) leave it alone...

So for the LG firmware updates the instructions mention about having one drive on as a master on IDE for the flash.

so if you have 2 sata LG opticals then plug one in at time to flash each?
