Default Need Help

I took my 2 external 5tb SATA hds and "tried" to make them internal drives. When I plugged them into my motherboard and booted into Windows 7, it stated the drives need to be formatted. Is there something I can do to make Windows recognize the drives properly and all the files that were on it. Or can I simply not make an external drive into an internal without formatting it?

I don't want to lose the data that is on the drives. Just wondering if there is something I can do, other than using them as external drives again.
