Default Western Digital RED 4TB Review Comment Thread

Western Digital's $199 RED 4TB is aimed directly at NAS environments but it can actually sub in as a perfectly capable desktop drive too, despite a speed of just 5400RPM.

Been waiting a long time for these to replace some aging greens running raid 1 in my server. Any idea how loud these are vs something like greens?

Thanks for the review.

From my experience, the RED series is slightly louder than the Greens but not noticeably so when used on a daily basis.

The Green series is about as quiet a HDD as you are going to find, so basically any model will be louder. The REDs are a touch louder, but honestly they are not a 'growler' by any stretch. I doubt you will notice much difference between them...EXCEPT that the Red is meant for NAS environments and the Green is not. IMHO The new RED 2.0s are much more durable and a lot less....lets say 'less than optimal' than the first gen Red.

Read some threads on WD forum about hdd head parking issues that were present on the Greens. Also there's a lot of DOA reviews on the net about poor shipment packaging...

I'm seriously weary of ordering these now.
