My System Specs

Default Need help choosing SSD

I'm in the market for another SSD. I originally wanted Samsung but I don't feel comfortable purchasing one because of the need for IPR since Samsung SSD support is nearly non existent in Canada(or so I have read) and the fact they are already more expensive than everything else.

Currently looking at the Corsair Neutron/ Neutron GTX line but am wondering about their reliability as I haven't heard much about them at all. Also open to other suggestions. I am looking for something in the 240-256gb range. I don't need the ultra fast write speeds and I am simply looking for something with rock solid reliability at a competitive price range. Crucial also comes to mind.

So far my choices are between:

$200 Corsair Neutron 256GB (5yr warranty)
$190 Crucial M500 (3yr warranty)
$205 Samsung 840 (3 yr IPR) - After purchasing IPR will give easy no wait RMA and similar price to others.

These all fall within $15 from eachother and if I were to go up to the 840 pro I am looking at an extra $65-80 before tax considering I would want IPR on it. Which would you pick? Open to other suggestions as well.

Out of those I would take the Crucial M500.

The Crucial is on sale today: Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD1 2.5in 240GB SATA 6BPS 7MM Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) so I would go with that.

I have a Neutron GTX 240GB and it's died on me once already and Corsair's RMA time was less than ideal. Took about a month total from sending them the SSD to getting it back.

It was a roller coaster ride of emotions. :D

I'm so tempted to buy 2 but I really don't need that many.

Yup the Crucial is good kit. I use one in my secondary rig. Even has onboard flush in flight capacitors so data is not corrupted at the SSD level from a sudden power loss (windows screwing the pooch...is an entire 'nother story! but it wont be the SSD that kills the OS).

IMHO its hard to go wrong with Intel, Crucial or Samsung. These are the big boys in the industry for a reason. ;)

I just seen Intel 530 180gb went on sale for $10 more than I paid for the 240 crucial. Would I be retarded to return/exchange the Crucial for the Intel? I know it's 60gb smaller but it has a faster read and almost double as fast write speed.

Well you will also be hit with a 10-15% restocking fee.

Only you can answer the real question: does your system feel 'slow' right now? If does...take the hit. If doesn't.... does it matter if things load .5 - 1 sec faster?

Nice bonus with the M500 is that it supports eDrive, so you can run encrypted Bitlocker with no performance hit. (Only other drive that supports it at the moment is the Samsung 840 EVO, AFAIK.)
