My System Specs

Default Plextor M5 Pro Extreme or Crucial M500

I'm trying to decide between these 2 drives with 512gb/480gb. One concern is warranty. The Plextor has a 5 year vs Crucials 3yr. The Crucial has a cap of 72tb regardless of age. Anybody have an opinion?
Also , can anybody comment on dealing with either company concerning warranty issues from a Canadian perspective.

72TB is nothing for a 480GB drive. Does it seriously only have a 150 write cycle warranty?

Rated for 72tb TBW over 5 years. Would be worse with the 960gb version.

After seeing replies about Samsung warranty, I would take the time to see what support is available for each brand in Canada. That could be a deciding factor - if the drive goes south and there is no support in Canada, then you are in for some wait times!

I am now looking at getting a 120Gb SSD. This drive needs to have the access on long term reliability, not performance, since it will be used in an HTPC. The HTPC plays everything from a server, not locally, and is only booted on servicing or extended power failure (it is attached to a UPS).

The Samsung drives have about the best price, but given the concerns about support, they are now out of the list for me.

The two you have asked about here might be good choices, if we can find more information about them.....

Brewer265....Between the M5P and the M500...its a tough call. Both are great drives. M500 uses ONFi 3, M5P uses ONFi 2. BUT at the 480GB levels its 6 in one half dozen in the other. IF you plan on upgrading within 3 years...Pick which ever is cheaper. If you plan on using it for 4-5 pick the longer warranty.

I had a 'conversation' with OCZ over a similar DWPD rating...and its basically a non-issue and has to more to do with industry standard ratings than anything. Unless you stick it in a server and hammer it well and truly beyond (eg you hit 72 in 1 year...and then it dies 3mths later at 100TB) you will be fine.
