Default Boot drive on PCIe Sata III card?

I'm considering picking up a Sata III expansion card for my X58 EVGA (first gen so no native Sata III or USB3 ) but the information I'm seeing during my google searches is a bit wishy washy WRT a definitive answer on being able to boot from an SSD connected to it.

Is the answer so obviously "YES!!! " that nobody else in the world felt the need to verify it?

If the answer is yes, then anybody have a suggestion on a decently priced one? I don't need raid capabilities and suspect 2 ports would be more than enough.

Unless you're willing to shell out $100+ for a card, all the cheap cards you see use marvel chipsets and perform much worse than ICH10R ports.

That kinda bites.... and now I'm wishing I'd bought one of those new(er) gen 1366 motherboards when they were still around..... not gonna spend $400+ on one now......

edit.... I suppose though that a $100 card would be less expensive than a new motherboard and that I'd then end up with a raid card for a future build if I wanted it.

The x58 boards that have sata3 also use a marvel chipset and those blow as well unfortunately :( i tried using them on my sabertooth and it was slower than the Intel ports.

Even on the expensive daughter cards...they still are 'meh' at best. Best advice I can give...dont do it. Get a good ssd...and use it in compatibility mode on the ICHR...then when you upgrade you will get a nice little boost in performance....AND its a great excuse to get new kit (say after H lands...and the older kit is hella good..at hella good prices as peeps dump their 1155 and chase the next best thing). :)

YMMV

Yeah, as per your advice I'll probably just stick with sata II ports then... now to go shopping for a 240G :)

I'm in the same boat as you Steve, I wanted to upgrade to get SATA3 / USB3 but I am just waiting until I get a whole new board/cpu combo.
