Default Fast OS HDD setup

Hi guys,

Would appreciate if anybody could suggest a good fast OS System HDD. I'm looking probably then for SSD? I didn't watch for hardware news in a while so fell out of touch. I need around 500GB of space on it.

Thanks,

Or go hybrid if $400 hurts too much. Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Solid State Hybrid SATA Drive 2.5IN - Bare Drive

I can tell you from experience the hybrid drives are -solid-

I currently have one in my laptop and it doesn't feel like it's a mechanical drive at all for day-to-day activities. Obviously heavy transfers and game loading isn't going to be as snappy but I can wait a few more seconds to frag.

Thanks for the replies!

Well I wouldn't really watch for money with this buy. So I'd go around top range. Not really the top best exclusive thing that would cost like $1000, but around $500 is fine.

I currently have WD Raptor 150GB. So I'm checking specs for it now and I see it has 150mb/s. So comparing with what stoanee suggested (Extreme Series SATA III Solid State Drive, 480GB) it loses badly. Extreme Series SATA III Solid State Drive, 480GB says to have 550mb/s? Wow! that's then a rock solid buy??

Any SSD is going to kick the Velociraptor's butt.

But that badly? That's insane. Things really changed from the time I last checked. 150MB/s to 550mb/s. It is really that much faster? And hence totally quiet?

Thanks,

Yes, SSD's are that fast.

Here's AkG's review of the 240GB Extreme model: SanDisk Extreme 240GB SSD Review

It got 2 awards, and his only real complaint was that the PCB wasn't fully populated which is not the case with the 480GB version you're looking at. If it's in the budget, this would be one of the drives I'd take a serious look at.
