i have an HDD that i want completely empty. it has windows 7 on it now. but i am using an ssd as well, so i want the HDD empty.
how do i do this?

So you're currently booting off of the SSD? If so the easiest method would be to open the file folder / go to computer / right click on the HDD and select format.

˙es i am booting from the ssd. wil formating clear it all? so it is compleatly empty?

It will clear the files, what it won't do is secure the files so that they can't be recovered.

You can also go Control panel / Adminstrative Tools / Computer Management / Storage / Disk Management and then from there delete the partition on the HDD and then recreate it. Once you've done that you can reformat it.

what is best? delete the pertition or just reformat?

The best would be a proper wipe of the hard drive so nothing can be recovered. Wipedisk is a great little utility, free and it's standalone so you don't even need to install it.
