Default Update on SSD?

I'm out of the loop. They have gone down in price but are they still a good investment? Is it bad to format these more than a couple of times?

Can you have more than one partition? I know they are ideal for OS drives since you will have good speed but I was curious if you experiment and use other Operating Systems, what then? Is it better to use a SSD for a main OS and install extra operating sytems on a partitioned normal (platter type) HDD?

I also read to stay away from OCZ if you go with a SSD. I don't know what the tech is nowadays or what one would get.

I'm mostly just curious. I probably wouldn't have more than $100 to spend on one if I ever did. ;-)

Certainly wouldn't harm the speed of the PC. I haven't heard any issues with multi OS on one SSD. The SSD and the HDD are very similar in how they can operate so it's not an issue with configuration as long as you have enough for what you want ON it. That being said, you can still use an alternate drive for some data. Most I've seen incorporate SSD and HDD.

The only issue with OCZ is the fact the company had been giving itself away. Fear in readers were driving them to think OCZ as a company was folding. Who knows in the long run if they do at this point. They are attempting something to "salvage" the company I suspect. I wouldn't be put off from getting one. I saw a Black Friday deal cutting a 240 GB down to just over $100. I missed out because it sold out relatively quick.

The reason people are worried isn't because of quality of drives or anything, it's a matter of the warranty going away with the company if something happens. If you don't care about that and you are fine with going out and buying another drive outright if something happens to yours, then take advantage of the price drop. I just like to mitigate risk, and part of that is buying from companies that I know will most likely be around for the life of my product to service it if need be.
