Default Western Digital worth the extra premium?

Hey guys,

Want to get a 2TB hard drive, now is WD Black really worth the extra premium over Seagates?
I see in some cases, a 3TB Seagate HDD is the same price as a 2TB HDD...

Thanks

The WD Black is a good drive with quite good performance. Whether it is worth the premium becomes a matter of opinion. More than price is also a factor, size/cache/RW times/warranty/experience all play a role. For myself, I prefer Seagate. Others will prefer WD.

I am a fan of Seagate as well. Not that there is anything wrong with WD Black at all, its just that the performance is nearly identical in seagate drives and they are cheaper (likely because of the issues they had years ago with the 7200.11 versions). Have had my 500gb 7200.12 for 3 years now with no issues at all (same type in my parent's for 2 years and the 1TB in my brother's for 2.5 years). Really its your call if its worth it.

I think a 3TB Seagate is as fast or faster than a 2TB Black because of better density on the platters. Either or. I find that I'm not as concerned about hard drive speed now that I have a SSD in the system. Anything that I want to load faster goes on the SSD.

I"ve only used WD. The deal breaker is the warranty. All drives lately seem to fail prematurely as of late but when comparing Seagates 1 yr vs WD's 5 year warranty plus the no questions asked, very fast turn around on RMA (Blacks) WD wins HANDS DOWN !!!
You can compare size, speed, cache, price till your head spins but in the end 59.99 months from the day you bought it you're warranteed plus whomever buys it from you down the road.

If the drive is just used for storage then I'd buy whatever is the cheapest. All manufacturers have failures.

Alright folks, thanks for the positive input. I'll just go with Seagate. I do have a 128GB right now, but as time goes, I may get a larger SSD 256 GB and use the 128GB for SSD caching..

I've pretty lost faith in Seagate at this point. After the 7200.11 problems and now a firmware issue with some of their drives (in Dells and possibly elsewhere) I won't touch them in my own system.

I had over half of my 12 Seagates fail prematurely, I think it was around 8 of the 12 for ratios. Good on the RMA, fast cross ship..... cant trust the product. I have issues with WD as well, but less so.... I went Hitachi on my last batch of 8 drives and they have been great.... sad thing is Toshiba is buying their 3.5" business... a company I truly despise.
