Default WD Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS

I'm considering getting the WD Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS as an OS drive. Do I need to partition the drive to maintain performance? My preference is to leave it as one drive, but if it affects the OS performance at some point, then I will partition it.

I partition for safety. I do a lot of software tweaking that can render my OS unstable if I make a mistake, so rather than reinstall my OS on the whole drive and potentially loose 500gb of data (I have the 500AAKS), I only lose my 5gb OS partition when I re-format/repair.

Would partitioning give better performance though or is there no difference?

You won't gain any performance increase if you partition.

Less fragmentation should mean slightly better performance.

Where do you find this drive anyways?

I have been looking all over for it in the recent weeks, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Canada Computers has them for on sale right now for $123. I just got one of these a couple days ago and am installing OS as I type this.

Yes, it gives you better performance.

That is because it lowers the access time for a certain portion of the drive.

It is sure taking NCIX/DC a while to stock this little gem....I've been anxiously waiting for over 6 weeks!

I only have 3GB of HDD space left, so it is Touch & Go every day
