Default Crucial M4 256GB Update: The Power of Firmware Comment Thread

A short while ago we reviewed the Crucial M4 256GB SSD but we couldn't just leave things at that since a new (supposedly) performance increasing firmware was just released for it. In this quick article we look at the differences brought about by this new, much ballyhooed 0009 version. Has Crucial accomplished the impossible by releasing an easy to install update that breathes new life into their M4 family? We're about to find out.

I wish I installed W7 on my 128GB M4 BEFORE I flashed the firmware to 009. Excellent drive nonetheless from a company that provides a lot of value to the consumer.

Quick note. You can put the ISO firmware image on a USB stick in order to avoid burning a cd! You can use a utility like this one: http://www.linuxliveusb.com/

total props to Crucial for this.. i just picked up a 128gb one too, and updated it to 0009 right away. had my fair share of SF 2281 problems w/the corsair force 3's .. and now reliability plus great 4k speed is so nice to have! i never minded the sequential read/write in the original firmware, because I never deal with huge incompressible files, but the boost in 0009 is welcomed nonetheless.

Any chance of seeing the M4 128GB on the test bench in the near future? Would be nice to see how it stacks up against the 120GB SF competition.

I'll be picking up the M4 256gb sometime soon. It was already at the top of my list before the firmware update, my only question is will the firmware hurt the reliability of the drive at all.
