Default Raid 0 question

I have a WD 640GB black which I am running out of capacity soon. It has dual boot win7/debian on it, plus all my data files in debian /home. I want to buy another WD 640GB black and run raid 0 with my existing one (which is about 2 yrs old). Can I install them without loosing my installations (os and data), or do I have to wipe the old one clean, create raid 0 and then load the os images and data files back?

you will loose everything to do raid 0

since they have to be reconfigured to work in raid 0
and the data is spread out on raid 0

this is the downfall of raid 0. loose one drive, loose all data

Thanks for reminding me of the weak point of raid 0. I found out I cannot get WD 640 black any more. I'll have to get a single 1.5TB drive and use this 640 for my older pc.

if your existing HDD has been installed in RAID 0 config from the beginning, despite the fact that it is a single drive, there should be an option of the managing software to simply add another drive to the matrix without destroying the data. i think this is the Online Migration Option.

Thanks Marstg. My hdd was not installed in Raid 0 configuration. I will consider this option when I install my new drive.
