Default WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0

guys, i got some more drives, just checking out two of them.

now, on the back side, each has like a scratch/cut in the round metal casing thingie, and i dont remember
if i looked at the other ones before installing them. nothing special, its just in the metal, but
a little bit weird.

do your drives have it too? got them from ncix. tried to take a picture but i fail at photography lol soo..

its like you take a small knife and make a small cut, both cuts are different, just enough to get to the metal thru the paint.
ill try again with the pictures but theyre really crappy.

good question, 3 platter drives i think. ak may shed more info.

I think I have this on my WD20EARS as well, cause I remember something oddly similar about the drive when I first got it.

I'll try to remember to double check tonight though.

i have a new one right n front of me now. on the bottom of the drive on the round metal "thingy" i have a round mark. it is just through the paint and into the metal. the round "thingy" i believe, is where the spindle is mounted inside.

if i hold the drive with the sata hook up pointing directly down, the mark is a little after 9 o'clock and on the outer edge of the "thingy".

one other rather odd thing. the metal cover on the drive that holds the information sticker is no longer mounted flush to the drive. on all of my older drives there is no gap, but there is here. its the same all the way around. curious

Hmm, just checked, nothing major on the back, there are a couple of 'cuts' I'd say, but not that deep and nothing to be concerned with.

Dan, the marks you see may be molding marks, the case of the drive is molded so it’s leaves traces, after they paint it and do some milling on it, that can leaves also traces, grooves or whatever. Probably nothing to worry as those imperfections are done before the mechanical is installed.

yup, i have no worries, running the drives right now...

but thing is, i dont want a 'yeah but there is a cut, we don't know how you abused physically the drive'
in case of an rma a couple years down the road. :D
