Default Not safe to put hard drives ontop on each other?

Last night I was putting some more of my parts for my HTPC build in a big box to get them all ready and together for the build and I put four of my 2TB drives on top of each other directly and my friend started freaking out saying I'm going to mess the drives up cause you can never put them on top of each other, is this true or is he just gone crazy? I currently still have four of them stacked up in place on my coffee table but if it's not safe I'd like to know before it's to late!

I assume you mean that they aren't plugged into anything and they aren't running?

I think you're friend is mis-informed about how magnetics and ESD work...

Basically, ESD or magnetic fields are the common ways to damage HDDs and stacking them on top of each other does not increase the risk of ESD (static discharge) and the shielding prevents magnetic damage.

I stack then all the time... usually in static bags but not always. Can't see how stacking them will harm them in any way.
