My System Specs

Default opinion needed. 640Blacks, 1TB Blacks or 2TB Greens

I need to spend some money, so im looking at adding some drives to my Windows Home Server, it has 4 x 640GB WD Blacks (64mb cache) already, NCIX has a great deal on now for the 640's (under $60 ea) Should i Buy 2 x 640GB Black's? (115$+tax) or 2x 1TB Blacks (169$+Tax) or 2x WD 2TB Greens (179$+Tax).

my dilemma is i wanted the 640's to add to my array/pool to keep things consistant, but for an additional $20 a drive i can get the 1TB Blacks... then for an additional 10$er i can get 4TB (2TB Greens)

im just looking for a second opinion. thanks for any help. Im off to NCIX in like 30mins...

Since this seems to be a storage issue, I would suggest the 2TB greens, much more bang for buck. I too wanted to keep things consistent once, but you just cant beat the value of the 2TB greens :S

You are indeed limited by network speeds. The performance hit is minor IMO, read speeds are not far off the blacks even if you were to access the drives directly.

Its not noticeable unless you are doing huge transfers.

Thanks, I needed that second opinion. I did want to set up a raid, but controllers are too expensive, and i thought greens / or i read they dont work in raid, so was leaning toward the Blacks. but your right they are the most bang for your buck, and since im using WHS , they will be a huge bump to the storage pool... 6.5TB look out here i come.

Go for the greens for storage. Cool, Quiet, Low power usage. Ive been running some wd20eads and a wd20ears for some months now and they all work great.

Not worth the extra money for the blacks if it is just for storage.

i grabbed the WD 2TB Ears x 2. paid an extra 8$ total more than NCIX but a-power is up the block, and my time and gas would = more.

thanks for the feed back. Im using a segate 250GB as OS Drive.

If I'm remember well, raid is not supported by WHS, if you want to use the raid card, you have to build the raid and format them before ins tall WHS.

I also have Server 2003 and Server 2008. I went for the Cheap and Easy Home Server ( Raid Controllers and A real Server OS were too much).
