Default External USB 2.0 HDD for HTPC

I've been looking around recently for an external HDD to hook up to my laptop when I use it as an HTPC. I'll be using it to store all my videos (up to 1080p) and music. I have an older WD 500Gb external that I can use as a backup for important files.

Anybody have a recommendation for a good 2.0 Tb drive? I've been eyeing the Western Digital MyBook Elite for ~ $200 from Bureau en Gros/Staples (http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/ca...affixedcode=WW).

Would similarly priced options from LaCie or Seagate be just as good, or would I even be better off getting a WD Caviar Green and sticking it in an external enclosure?

Thanks.

just get any decent size hdd and buy an en-closer. problem is i don't think usb2.0 can handle the bandwidth needed for 1080p. i have never checked it out so not sure???

What motherboard are you running on your HTPC? You'd be much better off with an ESata enclosure if your motherboard will support it.

It's for a laptop. I hook it up to my TV via HDMI when I want to watch stuff, but it only has USB 2.0 ports and no ExpressCard slot.

In that case, I second the suggestion that you look at a HDD / Enclosure combo. I think you'll find it a lot less expensive.

usb 2 can do 1080p BUT it will be cutting it close on the higher bit rate stuff (i've occasionally had hiccups). If I was buying new i would get a usb 3 enclosure and adapter card....OR the cheaper option is eSATA enclosure. Set the system up to use ahci....and as long as you have a esata port on the mobo (or spend the couple bucks for an adpater) go that route. Either way usb 2 is not what I would spend money on now.

YMMV
