Looks like the drive was getting into a degraded state. THAT would tank speeds that much. Now it could just be the AMD hit all SSDs suffer (AMDs controller is much worse / inefficient then even ICH 9 for SSDs).

This is false for the Kingston drive in question, disabling write cache does indeed drop performance to the numbers he posted, sub 25 MB/s, i've seen it myself with my identical SSD.
