If you got the coin the Vertex is a (relatively) good deal. But then again...IF you got that kind of coin....damn near any of the best are in your price range.

Vertex 2 200GB would right up there at the top of my "I'll creep into your home and rob you in the night for it" list.
Same goes for the crucial 256 c300. Though Id take a V2 over it.

Another great first time drive is the X25m gen 2 160GB. Its about 5 bills...but "only" 160gb.

Go with SSDs.

Switching from HDDs to SSDs for me was like night and day. I had 3xVRaptors in raid0, and I switched to 3x 40gb SSDs by Intel, not only did my average read speed triple but everything is pretty much instant. IMO it was worth every 400,000 pennies I spent getting the SSDs.
