There is nothing wrong with the 500GB WD

Western Digital vs Seagate comes down to personal preference.

Some people like myself love Seagate and others love Western Digital.

The WD's are a little quieter, but it's no night and day comparison. Both are fast, and both hold 500GB of un-formatted storage.

Both perform very well in comparison to older versions BUT WD has a slight edge this round. I am personally hardware agnostic and I have built systems using both the 7200.10s and the WD Se16's. Both are very good choices.

Honestly what is important to you.

IF its warranty most WD's carry 3 years. Seagate has a 5 year.

If its noise then its Western Digital. They are much more tolerant of different PSUs and ripple. Their seek noise is also more subtle.
The Seagates 7200.10s can be much more noisier if they don't like your power supply. I have seen them make horrible nosies when on Fortron's (like their Bluestorm) and be angel silent when transfered to a seasonic psu. My recommendation is ask other people who have the same power supply what they are using and what their comments are. Even when they "like" your powersupply they are still a little bit louder (some compare it to a "chirping" sound) but not by a HUGE margin.

If its performance: neither are bad choices. There are some reports of the latest firmware revision of the 7200.10s having an artificial speed limiter on them (HDtach is a near FLAT LINE instead of a nice curve...or put another way its only as fast as its slowest point). To me I do find my WD faster than my Seagate.

If its HEAT: WD wins. The seagate is a hotter running hard drive...NOT maxtor level heat but it does pump out more.

Once you know what is important to you THEN you can make an informed decision on which is best for YOU.

IMHO: toss a coin...both are close enough not to sweat the differences over

It seems that I'm going on Western Digital...btw in general if the hard drive size is like 500gb it will read 500 or 490?..Because My Windows Xp (64 bits) only recognizes 297Gb out of my 320gb Seagate..i think that's normal..or not?

I couldn't figure out anything beyond enabling big LBA to recognize >137gb - I lost about 25gb on my 320gb HD, and maybe another 28-30gb on my WD 500gb. It's nice and quiet, I love it so much I bought another from tddirect.ca as they were having a sale.

I wish I could figure out where those 25-30gb on both drives went, it's so annoying!
