Default What is currently the best GB/Price Harddrive?

I'm looking for another storage HDD.

I've currently had 1TB and 1.5TB drives from Hitachi, Seagate, Samsung and Western digital.
From use, I've found WD Green HDDs to be best suited for my needs.
Although they lack performance wise (variable rpm/stops when in idle, runs when in use), they are quite quiet and cool in comparison to the others I have used.

I was considering newer 2TB or 1.5TB 64MB cache drives.
From what I can tell 1.5TB drives seem to have the best price/capacity ratio, but would 2TB drives be worth it?

In another note, anyone try out the Samsung Spinpoint F2 Ecogreen 1.5TB?
I can find it for slightly over $100, so it seems to be in the sweet spot for price/capacity, but I'm not sure about OEM Samsung HDDs.
I personally had bad experiences with Hitachi OEMs, thus my dilemma.

I always buy WD, Seagate as a 2nd choice, never had a problem with them. NCIX has a really nice 2TB drive for $150

NCIX.com - Buy Western Digital WD20EADS Caviar Green 2TB SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM - WD20EADS In Canada.

I'm sure you might be able to find other brands for cheaper, but like I said I love WD.

I have EXACTLY the same question.

Is Hardware Canucks planning on reviewing the WDxxEARS anytime soon?

OP, after reading quite a bit on it, I think the choices are between Samsung and WD Green WDxxEARS series. It's what I'm debating, anyway. I need a storage drive soon so I don't know whether to stay the older style drive or take a chance with the new 4k byte sector drives. They need parttions to be aligned or they're slower than older style drives! But, they're supposedly pretty fast for 5400rpm drives if parttions are aligned properly.

Even Samsung F3 7200rpm drives are potentially good for storage drives although temps and power are slightly higher than the F2 EcoGreen. But, for strict storage, the F2 is my other choice so I'm comparing it with the WD.

Don't worry about Samsung drives. Imho, overall, they are the safest choice. I think it's just whether you decide to go wth the new format or old one. Samsung hasn't introduced any new format drives yet.

currently I find the 750 GB - 1 TB drives have the best $/GB -- the 1.5 and higher typically carry a price premium! However that WD green previously posted is the best I've seen in a while :O

wd for sure, size wise, if you get 1.5 now you wont upg the 1tb in 6 months, so overall i say less cash out of your pocket in the short-medium term

1.5 TB drives have the best $/GB. Its 2TB drives that carry the ridiculous premium.

I can vouch for the WD greens as pretty decent storage drives, I have a pair from last year but 1TB and 8MB cache (WD10EAVS). Run cool and quiet, about 32C for mine. Only thing with the greens is that they park their heads after periods of inactivity, it makes a slight click/clunk when they do that

I've already ordered a 2TB WD Caviar Green and it is being delivered tomorrow.

It's about time I tried 2TB HDDs out, since I've been using 1.5TBs since they first came out.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have the WD WD15EARS (64MB) that rapmaster recommended, and I can vouch for them.
They are by far one of the most quiet and coolest (temperature wise) 1.5TB HDDs I've used.
Just be sure you are not using it for any performance requiring activities.
It seemed to have some sort of variable speed mechanism. I infer this because the WD15EARS I have stops spinning when it is idling.
