western digital green VS windows home server

odd thing this morning. turned the server on and 15 or so minutes later i got a "critical health" warning. it said that the western digital green 1.5 tb had failed.

i restarted the server and it went well and is runing fine.

i think it may have been an example of the drive "going to sleep". however this has never happened before.

the health is fine according to the server window. is the drive on the way out.

or is there a way to stop it from "sleeping?. or perhaps another non green drive (suggestions)

Which green drive do you have exactly, the EADS or EARS?

Sounds to me it just went to sleep.

Go into your device manager....find the HDD, there should be an option to turn power management off for the HDD. Failing that....look in your power settings.

WHS doesn't like Green drives as they park their heads after a very short period of inactivity (8 seconds or so. Listen carefully and you will hear the click sound it makes). This delay when sent commands from the OS can cause "errors" they really aren't errors but are annoying as all hell.

Do search for WDIDLE3.exe
It will change the timeout from the default 8 seconds to whatever you want it to be...or even disable it.

The only down side to doing this is....its not exactly recognized as a supported program for the Greens. IIRC WDIDLE was / is for 2.5 drives but it does work (or atleast did when I played with it). Will WD get nasty about it if you have to RMA it? No idea. Use at your own risk. ;)

I use about 5 WD green drives in my WHS and I have never had problems with mine. Go over to the Wegotserved forums and you will see more on this problem. Most people have no problem with the greenies but there are some that do.
