Default NTFS external drive in OSX 10.4.11

I have a friend running OSX 10.4.11 and I would like to make sure I'll be able to use my NTFS external drive on their Mac.

NTFS drives on Mac has always been hit or miss for me. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
What can I do/have them do to ensure it will work when I get there.

Note: I am not running OSX - running Vista, XP and Ubuntu set ups.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I never had luck with FUSE. However I liked Paragon's NTFS thingy... it is not exactly free unless, you know. ;)
