Default 1tb WD Black Question

Im up in the air about a HD, Not looking to get a SSD yet So im eyeing a new WD 1TB black.

Question:

Im thinking about making a 300gb partition Windows and Games... WIll that keep the speed up?

IS this considered short stroking?

i think you can do this but with 320g partition as this is the size of one platter.

If you want faster you better off getting a 640gb WD black.

The smaller the partition the better. IMO since the 640 and 1TB versions of the black have the same platter density, it doesn't really matter.

Since it uses ~333gb platters, I would short stroke it to at most 111gb x3. Go for a 150gb partition if you can. That felt pretty snappy when I shortstroked my 1TB Black

Why would you need 3 Small partitions?

Is it 1 for OS
1 for games?
1 for ?

I can only see use for 2 1 small 1 big.

Please explain, If im missing something.

IF you only set up and use one small partition on a bigger drive yes this would be considered short stroking.

BUT if you set up a second partition to use up the rest of the space....the speed will be reduced when compared to leaving it as one big partition. When you only use the inner 10-20% you get top speed all the time....BUT if your "d" drive is in reality the rest of the same hard drive the heads have to move all the way from the inner partition to the outer and back again every time you access the "d" drive. This will slow things down noticeably.

IMHO either make a 200 - 300 GB OS partition and leave the rest unused (the smaller the better!)
OR
use the entire drive and defrag regularly. Most good defag'ers will put the OS data in the fastest area for you. ;)

Darn no wonder when using a full drive (WD 1TB Black), I can hear the hard drive working its pants off lol, going from one place to another. Thanks for the explanation AkG..

Vlite is the way to go. Take out the unnecessary language files and the installation will trim down by around 2GB
