DVD Burner suggestions

I'm in the market for a new SATA DVD burner and need some suggestions on which models are good and which to avoid. My last one was a Pioneer 108 but I've read that the current Pioneer 118 is very low quality and nowhere near as good as previous models. By the way I prefer to shop at NCIX.com

not me... mine came straight from ncix, overheated like crazy and sounded like a jet engine. took it out and placed it in storage for a month, found out ncix wouldn't rma it for me. plugged it back in, lights turn on and wouldn't spin for damn. sitting in storage right now. piece of samsung sh!+

My mom was gonna buy a samsung 40" for a steal and I stopped her just because I still have a grudge against samsung for not rma'ing it because I'm canadian. Oh yea, all the samsungs at ncix are a joint scam between ncix and samsung, the warranty is only for ncixus customers, canadians don't get warranty. try claiming warranty for it, you get redirected to US site and asked to enter some stupid 5 digit version of postal code. gl with that.

Samsung tvs are some of the best.

Samsung writers are up there with LG.

I only trust my pioneer.. of which I'm STILL using a DVR-212

hmm probably luck of draw... I'm sticking with toshiba tv's and lg burner's all the way, one toshiba crt is still kicking around in the basement from 2001 or something, my dad's old reliable lg burner is still my favourite, I burn it on his drive over a network it's that good, better than my sony

What happened to NEC? They made great burners but are nowhere to be found now.

The only Pioneer SATA burner that seems to be available is the DVR-218 and it is nowhere near the same quality as previous models. For some reason they switched to a Mediatek Chipset in the DVR-218 and burn quality is now crap. The IDE model DVR-118 is the same. Previous Pioneer burners used NEC chipsets and were among the best. If you can find a DVR-217 or older then grab one.

Plextor still makes burners but not the same quality. NEC stopped making them completely.
